PSI is dismayed to learn of the attempted assassination on 15 July 2011 of Rachid Malaoui, General Secretary of PSI Algerian affiliate SNAPAP.
Brother Malaoui’s car was tampered with, and the brake fluid tube was cut. Luckily, he noticed the oil leak and called a mechanic before driving the vehicle. That act no doubt saved his life.
Brother Malaoui was on his way to see Raquel Rolnik, UN special Rapporteur, concerning the right to decent living accommodation. In a similar attack, Ahmed Kerroumi, trade unionist and member of CNCD Oran, was assassinated just a few days after meeting with the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and freedom of expression.
Brother Malaoui has decided not to file an official complaint, but PSI offers its support and denounces the attacks and violence against members of SNAPAP and other trade unionists in Algeria.
