As part of the international campaign for a financial transactions tax (FTT), activists around the world are inviting parliamentarians to sign a declaration of support for the FTT. About 800 have already signed. The campaigners hope to gather 2,000 signatures by 3-4 November 2011, when leaders of industrialized nations will gather in Cannes, France for the G20 Summit.
Only a fraction of the flow of money around the world is used to actually buy things and support trade. The vast majority is tied to speculation against national currencies and the operation of hedge funds -- the kind of activities that led to the worldwide financial crisis.
That's why momentum is now building for the FTT. A very small tax on these transactions could help bridge vital funding gaps in international development, alleviate poverty, and finance the work needed to address climate change.
The Parliamentarians' Declaration is available in a number of languages. Please download it and ask your Parliamentarian to sign on to the campaign.
